Gabe was about four years old when Laura and I took him along with his siblings, Harry, Ty and Alex to the Botanic Gardens one Sunday in spring when their parents were away on a little trip. We visited the Japanese Gardens and walked around the big pond enjoying the blooming flowers, including an amazing collection of roses, their fragrance floating through the sun-filled paths we walked. Gabe kept up with the others, as he always did, though his legs were about half as long as theirs.
I was feeling a little tired in the legs after a couple hours and so was Laura, so we told the kids we were going back home for something to eat.  As we piled into the station wagon, Gabe looked at me and smiled. “Thanks for the roses,” he said.
