When I called on Olympia in the class reading The Scarlet Letter we were talking about love, and suffering. “Isn’t it interesting,” I said, “that some people love more deeply, more completely, than others.”

“I don’t think they do,” she said. “When someone loves, he loves deeply — it’s just that people show it in different ways.”

“Do you mean that when we love it’s a state of being and that what shows on the outside varies, but all of us experience the same feeling?”

“Yes,” she said, “true love is a profound feeling in every person.”

“I find that a very interesting idea,” I said, “Do you think we would all define love the same way?

“I don’t know,” Olympia said.

“That would be a good topic for tomorrow, if we didn’t have to follow the curriculum guide.”
