In a session of the Basic Program, we were talking about God.  “I believe; I just don’t know what I believe,” Shouvi, an aged Jewish survivor of the Nazi camps, told us. Her arm, etched with the camp number, moved as she spoke. “When I was in the war, I prayed directly to God.  I talked to God.  I was young; that was all I could think of to do.  It was real, like talking to a friend, maybe more real.”
