Mother delivered her sister’s third child in 1927 and two years later delivered her twins in the same apartment in Chicago. My Aunt Mary had sent to Ireland for her younger sister when she found out she was expecting her third baby in as many years of marriage.
 
There was a special bond between Aunt Mary and Mother. I remember she always had a gift for my aunt on Mother’s Day.
 
By the time the twins were born, Aunt Della had been sent for and was there to help.
 
“That day, after hours of labor,” Mother remembered, “I turned to Della, who held the baby boy in her arms and told her, “there’s another one in there.”
 
In my aunt’s later years, after the booze that took her husband came to possess her, Aunt Mary seemed to speak ill of everyone she knew, except Mother. “Nellie was good to me,” she said.
