Part of the privilege of being a human being is to decide for oneself what to believe and value and how to live. It’s a large task, one that requires constant monitoring. Most of us have a conscience that oversees our choices.
How presumptuous is it for anyone to assume the right to decide these things for somebody else, let alone for everyone else. How can anyone, mortal like us, say to someone – I know what you should value, who you should love, what you think is important, how many children you should have, what books you can’t read, and how you should live. You don’t have to work these things out for yourself; it’s a big job and you don’t have to go to all that trouble. I will do it for you.
Let us think for ourselves. Let us not expect it to be easy. A lot of voices tell us what to do and how to do it. Even one voice presuming to know the way for us to live is one too many. That’s not their job; it’s ours.
